Every organization has a starting point. For Transformed Villages Initiative Association, it begins with Gerald Nasasira, a social worker, development practitioner and youth activist from western Uganda.
A Young Leader With a Vision
Gerald studied Social Sciences, majoring in Political Science and Social Administration, at Kyambogo University between 2015 and 2018, and had previously studied International Relations and Diplomatic Practice. While still a student, he founded initiatives around campus focused on self reliance, moral behavior and freedom from drug and substance abuse among young people. In 2018, that work drew the attention of BBC journalists from the United Kingdom, who visited to interview him about the impact of his initiatives.
From Campus Activism to Rural Development
Gerald went on to serve as a national youth activist, presiding over the Uganda Young Democrats chapter at Kyambogo University. Over time, his focus shifted from campus organizing to rural development in western and north eastern Uganda, where he has spent years mediating and reconciling families, working to reduce domestic and gender based violence, and training communities in poverty eradication.
Building TVIA
Transformed Villages Initiative Association was registered as a Community Based Organization to formalize this work. The organization's approach reflects Gerald's own philosophy: that lasting change comes from helping communities make better use of the resources they already have, rather than creating dependency on outside support.
Like many young leaders, he wants to see his country move from a peasant economy to a modern, prosperous one.
